in 2022, some friends and i (operating as the informal hacker collective 'cool tech zone') took it upon ourselves to design, market, and manufacture the world's first certified open-source hardware digital audio player (or 'mp3 player').
we ran a crowdfunding compaign on crowdsupply, selling a total of 1,300 units, each of which was assembled by hand in my living room.
the source code and design files for this device can be found on codeberg. we used freecad to design the case and fittings, kicad for the electronic design, and the firmware was programmed using c++ and lua.
we're working on a follow-up to this, but it's a lot of work. don't email me about it unless you're like a tech millionaire offering us money or something.
